Yoga Studios in Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is one of the world's great yoga destinations — a tropical island where serious practice meets natural beauty. Whether you're looking for a drop-in class, a week-long immersion, or a full yoga teacher training, the island's studios and retreat centers have it covered.
Koh Phangan as a world-class yoga destination
Koh Phangan has built a global reputation as Southeast Asia's most concentrated yoga hub. What began as a quiet alternative to the island's Full Moon Party scene has, over two decades, evolved into a genuine pilgrimage destination for yogis of all levels and traditions.
The island's yoga scene spans everything from traditional Hatha and Ashtanga to dynamic Vinyasa flows, deep Yin practice, Kundalini awakening, and tantra-rooted Shakti yoga. The quality of instruction is exceptional — Koh Phangan attracts and retains teachers with decades of practice, many of whom hold lineage certifications from India and international teacher training bodies.
The tropical setting amplifies the practice: open-air shalas with jungle and ocean views, warm year-round weather ideal for morning practice, a resident community of like-minded practitioners, and an island pace that allows for genuine immersion. Koh Phangan isn't just a place to do yoga — it's a place to transform.

Types of yoga on Koh Phangan
The island's studios teach a wide range of traditions. Here are the major styles you'll encounter and what each one offers.
Hatha Yoga
The classical foundation of most modern yoga. Slower-paced, alignment-focused, and accessible to all levels. Ideal for beginners and those wanting to understand the fundamentals of posture, breath, and bandha. Agama Yoga Center is Koh Phangan's premier Hatha school.
Vinyasa Flow
Dynamic, breath-linked sequences that build heat, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. More physically demanding than Hatha, Vinyasa suits those who enjoy movement as meditation. The Sanctuary Thailand and Wonderland Healing Center both run excellent Vinyasa programs.
Ashtanga
A fixed primary series of postures practiced in the same order, developing remarkable strength, focus, and discipline. The Mysore method allows self-paced practice under a teacher's guidance. Available at select studios on the island including Orion Healing Centre.
Kundalini Yoga
A powerful and transformative practice combining kriyas (movement sequences), breathwork, mantra, and meditation to awaken the body's subtle energy. Often described as the most spiritually potent form of yoga — offered at several Koh Phangan centers including Sirius Retreat.
Yin Yoga
Long-held passive postures (2–5 minutes each) that target the connective tissue — fascia, ligaments, and joints. Deeply restorative and meditative. Often scheduled as the evening complement to a dynamic morning practice. Available at most retreat centers on the island.
Pranayama & Breathwork
Most yoga programs on Koh Phangan integrate pranayama (yogic breathing) as a core component. Some centers specialize in it. For dedicated breathwork retreats, see our Breathwork Retreats Guide.
Best time to practice yoga on Koh Phangan
November through April is the peak season for yoga on Koh Phangan. Cool-dry conditions with warm but manageable temperatures, low humidity, and calm seas make morning practice — especially outdoor sessions — genuinely exceptional. March and April are the busiest months; studios and retreats fill quickly. Book at least 4 weeks ahead.
May through July is shoulder season. Slightly warmer with occasional afternoon rain, but still excellent for practice. Fewer visitors means a quieter, more intimate studio atmosphere. Good value for longer stays and teacher trainings.
August through October is the wetter season, particularly on the east coast. The west coast — where Sri Thanu, Haad Salad, and most yoga centers are located — remains largely sheltered and suitable for practice. Retreats run year-round; some of the deepest immersion experiences happen during the quiet wet months.
For outdoor practice and ceremonies, aim for the dry months. For intensive indoor programs, teacher trainings, or budget travel, the wet season offers exceptional value with genuine depth of experience.
How to choose a yoga studio in Koh Phangan
Define your goal first. Are you looking for drop-in classes to complement a beach holiday, or a structured multi-day program with accommodation and meals? Most retreat centers on the island offer both — but your goal determines which environment is right.
Match the style to your body. If you're a beginner, start with Hatha or Yin. If you're already active and want intensity, Vinyasa or Ashtanga will challenge you. If you're seeking spiritual depth, Kundalini and tantra-rooted programs offer something different. Most studios offer trial classes — take one before committing to a week.
Consider location. Most of Koh Phangan's best yoga is concentrated in Sri Thanu (highest density of studios), Haad Salad (Sirius Retreat), Haad Tien Bay (The Sanctuary), and Chaloklum (Agama Yoga Center). Each area has a distinct character — research which feels right before booking accommodation.
Check teacher credentials. Look for teachers trained in recognized lineages — 200-hour or 500-hour RYT certification, or direct lineage study in India. The island's top studios are transparent about instructor backgrounds.
Read recent reviews. Quality fluctuates with which teachers are in residence. Check the center's current schedule and verify the instructor you want to study with is actually there during your stay.
Yoga studio locations on Koh Phangan
Sri Thanu & Ao Sri Thanu — The spiritual epicenter of the island. The highest concentration of yoga studios, healing centers, conscious cafés, and practitioners anywhere on Koh Phangan. If yoga is your primary reason for visiting, base yourself here.
Haad Salad (northwest) — Home to Sirius Retreat, one of the island's most respected transformation and yoga centers. Quieter than Sri Thanu, with a more intimate community feel and stunning jungle-ocean views.
Haad Tien Bay (east) — Secluded bay accessible only by longtail boat or jungle trail, home to The Sanctuary Thailand — Koh Phangan's original wellness resort since 1989. Daily yoga classes, detox programs, and a genuinely off-grid atmosphere.
Chaloklum (north) — A traditional fishing village on the north coast. Agama Yoga Center is based here — a serious Hatha and Tantra yoga school with a committed long-term student community.
Baan Tai & Thong Sala (south) — More activity from the Full Moon Party crowd, but several retreat centers operate here with good transport links to the rest of the island. Good base if you want both the party scene and yoga practice.
